Description:
James Michael Maher was born in Pierre, South Dakota, in 1957. After receiving a Master of Science in physiology and biophysics at Colorado State University at Fort Collins, Maher decided that metal was a better suited medium for him.
Cor ad Cor Loquitur was originally commissioned for the hospital of the Benedictine Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery in Yankton, SD. The sisters requested a sculpture that would exemplify their mission to bring the caring and love of Jesus to the world. The artist's 18-month-old son was the model for the child. Thus, Maher parallels Jesus' unconditional love for all with a parent's love for a child. The bench makes the piece more accessible to the viewer by extending an invitation for the viewer to sit while contemplating the themes of caring and love presented in the sculpture.
