Description:
Judd was an influential artist of the Minimalist era. He was a pioneer of the idea that an artwork did not need to be made by the artist's hand to be his artwork, and that an artwork did not need to be made by hand at all in order to be art. The vast majority of Judd's works are industrially manufactured steel forms, often squares, arranged in such a way that they recontextualize the space in which they are placed.
Later in life he became impatient with the curatorial system and temporary installments of an artwork, believing that pieces should have a permanent home. For that reason, public works like this one are extremely appropriate to his vision. This work is larger and thus more immersive than many of his works, which only served to emphasize the way it changes the way the space is perceived.
